Mastering the Coaching Process: Skills and Competencies for Training Monitoring and Management NPHZ-2025/10158

Technological advancements continue to transform the sport coaching process, equipping practitioners with tools for training optimization. The ability to identify key performance areas,
develop targeted training plans, and evaluate athletes’ adaptations is crucial throughout the whole process. Specifically, athlete monitoring plays a critical role, by providing information on training loads, fatigue, athlete readiness and performance. It is crucial that coaches possess relevant skills to conduct athlete monitoring, with the aim of making data-informed decisions. Through our ongoing Nordplus project, “Digitalization in the Coaching Process Across Nordic-Baltic Countries” (NPHZ-2022/10033), we collected feedback from partner institutions that identified critical areas for improvement in monitoring practices. These include: 1) Selecting high-quality monitoring tools and procedures; 2) Simplifying data collection and avoiding data overload, for better decision-making; 3) Developing time-efficient systems for data
management and sharing. Therefore, this two-year project aims to enhance coaches’ skills and competencies in implementing athlete monitoring tools and resources. Specifically, the purpose is to establish a practical framework to guide coaches in conducting high-quality monitoring, and promote efficient data sharing among all stakeholders within sport settings. Accordingly, the project objectives include: 1)Developing a set of theoretical and practical guidelines for collecting high-quality monitoring data; 2) Creating a unified online platform for efficient data collection, analysis, and sharing among stakeholders (e.g., coaches, athletes, medical staff, administrators, etc.). This project will not only strengthen the long-standing (≈15 years) Nordic-Baltic Sports Coaching Network, but also advance innovative practices in training monitoring and management, allowing coaches to optimize athletes’ performance and well-being.
