Athlete Training Technologies

Leader Professor Dr. Sigitas Kamandulis

The strategic research area programme Athlete Training Technologies is designed to develop research on fitness enthusiasts and elite athletes by integrating the knowledge of physiology, biomechanics, biochemistry, education, psychology, sport theory, systems theory and other state-of-the-art knowledge. Researchers analyse the relevant issues of training process planning and management, improvement of physical and functional fitness, injury prevention, overtraining, modelling of training technologies for athletes of various sports. Exceptional attention is given to basketball research considering the popularity of this sport in Lithuania. Methods for athlete performance testing and monitoring are developed, improved and implemented in a variety of sports with the aim of providing the coach with more information about the athlete’s changing state. Simple non-invasive but informative tests and methods to personalise the training process for young and elite athletes are sought. The aim is also to find out the model characteristics of elite athletes and to create a database of athletes of different age, gender and fitness levels.

Researchers use the latest technologies such as GPS, wireless electromyography, electrocardiography, gas analysis, near-infrared spectroscopy, CO rebreathing to quantify blood volume and haemoglobin mass, and other modern systems. Athletes are tested in stationary laboratories at LSU and in their training places around the country using the University’s Mobile Lab.

The researchers will collaborate with other LSU research groups, with researchers from other Lithuanian universities and especially with foreign researchers from the Norwegian Institute of Sports Science (Norway), Manchester Metropolitan University (UK), Foro Italico University of Rome (Italy), University of Tartu (Estonia) and other institutions.
