Lithuanian Sports University and JSC “Trikotažo Gama” have carried out a project “The Impact of Sportswear on Working Capacity during Exercise”. A thorough investigation aimed at assessing (possible) impact of functional underwear, produced from different raw materials on physiological and psychological characteristics of athletes while cycling at high intensity. During exercise at low temperatures (+5˚C), the athletes lost an average of nearly 1.0 kg. However, physiological parameters (internal body temperature and heart rate) during exercise and recovery did not depend on underwear.

More moisture was emitted into the environment wearing merino sheep wool (MER) fibre underwear than wearing clothes made of similar polyester (PL) and hybrid fibre (PL-MER) during exercise and recovery. Athletes felt less moisture in clothes wearing an outfit of MER type; clothes remained comfortable for a longer period. Moreover, athletes put less effort during the same exercise than wearing PL and PL-MER outfits. The project is funded by the European Regional Development Fund and the State budget funds in accordance to VP2-1.3-ŪM-05-K means “Inočekiai LT“, designated for the beginners of innovative activities or small and medium-sized business entities.
