New LSU Rector has been elected

Aivaras Ratkevičius, Doctor of Biomedical Sciences, scientist of the University of Aberdeen (Scotland) and the Head of the Department of Applied Biology and Rehabilitation, has been elected as a new Rector of Lithuanian Sports University (LSU) for the term of office of five years. The election took place at LSU Council meeting of April 12.

Vice-Rector for Studies Prof. Dr. Rasa Jankauskienė was also a candidate to fill the position of the Rector.

  “We are glad that two qualified candidates to fill the position of the Rector participated in the election and presented the future vision of LSU. The new Rector will face a number of challenges during the next five years, higher education reform, worsening demographic situation and growing international competition to be named among others. A. Ratkevičius has significant international experience, and we hope that he will continue and develop the work started, as it got excellent reviews from international experts who performed institutional evaluation”, said the Chairman of LSU Council Arūnas Kučikas.

 A. Ratkevičius graduated from Lithuanian Sports University (Lithuanian State Institute of Physical Education at that time) in 1988, and was conferred Doctoral degree in Biomedical Sciences in 1996.

  From 1993 to 2002, A. Ratkevičius worked as a research fellow at the Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Research Centre, Panum Institute, University of Copenhagen; from 1998 to 2002 he was an Assistant Professor of Metabolic Biochemistry at the Department of Medical Biochemistry and Genetics, Panum Institute, University of Copenhagen and worked as a lecturer at the University of Sunderland (Great Britain) from 2002 to 2005.

  In recent years, A. Ratkevičius has worked at the University of Aberdeen and has led the Department of Applied Biology and Rehabilitation, LSU.

  The Rector of LSU is elected by an open competition, appointed for the term of office of five years for not more than two terms of office in succession and dismissed by the University Council.

 Prof. Habil. Dr. Albertas Skurvydas was the Rector of LSU for the last two terms of office in succession.
