Dr. D. Novak: How Do Social Networks Promote Physical Activity?

What connects social networks, social capital, and physical activity? How can social support motivate people to exercise more and live healthier lives?
Answers to these questions will be sought on October 23rd at the Lithuanian Sports University (LSU) Sport Forum by one of the event’s keynote speakers – Dr. Dario Novak, associate professor at the University of Zagreb (Croatia) and internationally recognised researcher of kinesiology.

The associate professor at the University of Zagreb will present a keynote speech on “Social Networks, Social Support and Social Capital of Physical Activity” which will reveal how interconnectedness and trust-based networks can encourage a more active lifestyle. According to the researcher, physical activity is not only an individual choice, but also a social phenomenon that depends on the environment, support, and social capital that we create every day.

“Physical activity does not only concern health, but also is a social phenomenon. It strengthens interpersonal relationships, community involvement, and trust, which are key elements of social capital,” – explains the researcher.

D. Novak is not only an associate professor at the Faculty of Kinesiology of the University of Zagreb. His academic career also includes postdoctoral fellow research at Columbia University (US) and Harvard University (US). His research interests lie in integrated and holistic approaches in the field of human health and performance, and he has authored over 200 publications in various scientific international journals.

“I am eager to discuss my insights at the LSU Sport Forum in Kaunas. In my speech, I will highlight the fact that physical activity is positively linked to social trust, civic engagement, and reduced social isolation. Research shows that people who actively participate in social physical activity feel a greater level of social support and belongingness,” – shares D. Novak.
The LSU Sport Forum is an annual platform that brings together researchers, coaches, sport professionals, and policymakers from around Europe. At this year’s event, participants will hear about and discuss fair play in sport, the importance of social capital, and the influence of genetics in competitive sports.
