The thesis defense period for bachelor’s and master’s students has ended at the Lithuanian Sports University (LSU), and this year it features several well-known names from the Lithuanian basketball community.
In recent days, university classrooms have become venues where athletes and coaches with years of sporting experience present their research projects and analyze current trends in basketball.
Among this year’s graduates is former member of the Lithuanian men’s national basketball team Renaldas Seibutis, who defended his bachelor’s thesis on the free-throw accuracy of Kaunas Žalgiris in Lithuanian Basketball League (LKL) and EuroLeague games.
Master’s theses were defended by Jonas Valančiūnas and Tautvydas Sabonis. Valančiūnas’ research focused on the evolving role of big men in elite basketball, while Sabonis analyzed Kaunas Žalgiris’ performances in Lithuanian Basketball League finals and the factors behind the team’s success.
Following his bachelor’s thesis defense, Seibutis did not hide his emotions and admitted that the academic challenge had caused no less anxiety than the most important games of his career.
“I’ve just found out that I passed. I’m very happy and finally no longer feel the stress and anxiety that I had right before the defense,” said Seibutis.
The former basketball player revealed that the path to earning a university degree took longer than he had originally planned. An early start to his professional career forced him to postpone his studies, but after retiring from basketball, he decided to return to academia.
“After returning to Lithuania and finishing my basketball career, I never doubted that one day I would pursue a university degree. I’m very happy that today I can say I have achieved that goal,” he said.
Tautvydas Sabonis, who defended his master’s thesis, admitted that speaking before the defense committee was even more challenging than working with a basketball team.
“It was one hundred percent harder here than in competition,” Sabonis said with a smile.
According to him, higher education is just as important for athletes as their professional careers on the court because it provides broader opportunities for the future.
“I would like to remind every athlete that a sporting career ends sooner or later, so it is extremely important to have an education and opportunities for the future,” he said.
Meanwhile, Jonas Valančiūnas acknowledged that conducting academic research allowed him to look at basketball from a different perspective.
“From a practical standpoint, I already knew many things, but the scientific analysis and research process helped me discover quite a lot of new insights,” said Valančiūnas.
Ramūnas Butautas, Head of the LSU Basketball Research and Studies Centre, expressed pride in the university’s distinguished graduates. According to him, the day is a true celebration for the university because athletes are not only striving for success on the court but are also continuously building their academic knowledge.
“I am very pleased that our students have gained extensive knowledge based on the findings of sports science research. I have no doubt that this will provide a significant boost to the quality of their work in the future,” said Butautas.
This year, Steponas Babrauskas, Virginijus Sirvydis, and Šarūnas Vasiliauskas, along with other well-known athletes and coaches, also completed their studies at the Lithuanian Sports University.
An increasing number of professional athletes are choosing to study at LSU not only to earn a degree but also to deepen their understanding of sports science, coaching processes, performance analysis, and modern trends in sport. The university emphasizes that the combination of athletic experience and academic knowledge is becoming increasingly important both in professional sport and in future careers beyond it.
The Lithuanian Sports University graduation ceremony will take place on June 23 at the Kaunas Sports Hall. Diplomas will be awarded to students who have completed bachelor’s and master’s degree programmes, including several well-known representatives of Lithuania’s sporting community.
