US press is interested in the research carried out by LSU and foreign scientists
If you are not very physically active, but eager to exercise and quickly improve muscle endurance and strengthen health, short but intense workout will be the right thing to do. This has been proven by a research carried out over the last couple of years by the scientists of the Institute of Sport Science and Innovations, LSU and their foreign colleagues.
Prof. Dr. Sigitas Kamandulis, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tomas Venckūnas, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Marius Brazaitis, Dr. Gintautas Volungevičius, Prof. Habil. Dr. Albertas Skurvydas together with the scientists from Karolinska Institute (Sweden) and the University of Lausanne (Switzerland) published the research results in an article ”Ryanodine receptor fragmentation and sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca2+ leak after one session of high-intensity interval exercise“. The article was published in November, in one of the world's top scientific journals Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), the citation index of which is 9.674. It is the highest evaluation of the research carried out at LSU.
“Our research results have received great interest from Sport Science professionals. Last week, this article was the most popular among all the publications of Lithuanian research institutions in the scientific database Researchgate. It was read and commented on foreign Internet portals that publish various research results and discussed in “The Wall Street Journal“, said the Director of LSU Institute of Sport Science and Innovations Prof. Dr. S. Kamandulis.
According to one of the co-authors of the article Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tomas Venckūnas, the research results indicate that a short-term physical load of the highest intensity– 6 Series of 30 seconds of cycling – causes greater changes in muscle protein than a marathon running. “After a short-term repeated physical load of the highest intensity muscles need long recovery. This kind of training is effective in improving muscle endurance and health. Interestingly, the positive effect of such training is especially noticed for low-active beginners“, said Assoc. Prof. Dr. T. Venckūnas.
