LSU international research project presented at the largest sport science event in Europe

On 6—9 July, the representatives of Lithuanian Sports University (LSU) Prof. Dr. Arūnas Emeljanovas, Dr. Vida Janina Česnaitienė and lect. Brigita Miežienė participated in the largest sport science event in Europe – the 21st Annual Congress of the ECSS in Vienna (Austria). Held since 1996, the Congress hosts about 3,000 participants from all over the world every year with invited speakers and the world's most famous sports scientists and academics presenting their research. LSU is among the contenders to organize the Congress in 2020. So far, no sport science congresses have been held in the Baltic or Eastern European countries.

LSU representatives presented scientific reports prepared together with Prof. Dr. Ingunn Fjørtoft and Dr. Lise Kjønniksen, colleagues from the University College of Southeast Norway. The research findings of the project carried out by LSU “Modernisation of Pre-school and Primary Education Content and Teachers' Professional Development through Introduction of Physical Fitness Testing Methodology” were presented to the Congress participants. The project aims at investigating physical fitness of Lithuanian pre-school and primary school pupils. Based on the research results, a training programme for pre-school and primary school teachers will be developed and training courses for 1,200 teachers in 60 municipalities will be launched.

”The event was attended by scientists from 66 countries. This is one of the most important annual sports science events in Europe, giving the opportunity for researchers to share experiences, discuss, raise ideas, consider important issues in sport science and make new acquaintances. I have no doubt that our on-going project is relevant not only for Lithuania, but also for other countries, because our scientific report received great interest from foreign colleagues. We had a lot of discussions with researchers from Germany and Switzerland “, said project manager A. Emeljanovas.

The aim of the project is the modernization of pre-school and primary education content and teachers’ professional development through introduction of physical fitness testing methodology in Lithuania. There are not any scientifically based instruments to test pre-school and primary school pupils’ physical fitness in Lithuania. For the development of physical fitness testing and assessment methodology, LSU representatives are going to use a set of physical fitness tests for children developed by Norwegian scientists.

The project “Modernisation of Pre-school and Primary Education Content and Teachers' Professional Development through Introduction of Physical Fitness Testing Methodology” is implemented under the LT08 “EEA Scholarship Programme” and is funded by the European Economic Area (EEA) Financial Mechanism. The Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Lithuania is the programme operator, while a part of the operator functions is carried out by the Central Project Management Agency.
