University researchers investigate boxers

The researchers of the LSU Institute of Sport Science and Innovations together with the teachers and students of the study programme Coaching Systems have launched an investigation "Boxer speed endurance training in a series of blows with different rest periods”. During the investigation athletes will test hand stroke power, frequency and endurance while hitting the bag with maximum effort simulating the fight of 3 rounds. In addition, athletes will be tested for reaction to workload and anaerobic performance indicator change. “The investigation involved two groups of athletes, consisting of specialization students and high mastery athletes. We seek that scientists work closely with specialization teachers and students. Upper limb speed power has not been studied a lot. Despite the fact that boxing is a popular sport, the number of scientific publications in international journals is limited. Therefore,  our study is outstanding”, said Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sigitas Kamandulis, the Director of the Institute of Sport Science and Innovations.

Speed power training exercises will be held for six weeks in a Boxing Hall. Students of Coaching Systems degree programme, boxing specialization, are actively involved in the investigation. The outcomes of the investigation will be published in an internation scientific journal. “We want to improve the process of preparation of boxers through this investigation. Coaches feel a serious lack of research-based methodology. A boxer must be fully prepared – this sport requires speed, speed power endurance and power; all muscle groups are engaged. Psychological preparation is also important, so the investigation can reveal essential aspects of the athlete training”, said Vidas Bružas, a teacher and honored Lithuanian coach.
