Lithuanian Sports University received a life-saving gift from Donatas Motiejūnas

Basketball player gave a defibrillator as a gift to Lithuanian Sports University. The device is used for resuscitation of a person in the event of sudden clinical death.

“There is no doubt that such a device is necessary at Lithuanian Sports University, as students play intensive sports, do exercises and participate in various competitions. In addition, city sporting events are organized near the university. We discussed the need to purchase this device during lectures. I am glad that defibrillators have been installed in many sports arenas in Lithuania. In the United States, the device is of particular importance and has already saved lots of lives,“ said D. Motiejūnas.

According to LSU first aid teacher Assoc. Prof. Dr. Saulė Sipavičienė, a defibrillator is easy to use, because all instructions are read aloud. The person providing the aid must simply listen to the instructions and execute them. When people know that there is a defibrillator nearby, know how to use it and can immediately start resuscitation, the chance of saving a human life increases several times. The entire University community will be taught to use the defibrillator.

“A person with a sudden heart failure may lose consciousness and stop breathing within 10 to 20 seconds. When this happens, it is important to act quickly because the first minutes are decisive. First you need to call 033, start chest compression and perform artificial respiration. When there is a defibrillator, it must be used. A voice recording from the defibrillator gives instructions on what to do, so one should not be afraid to go wrong. When the electrodes are attached to the affected body, the automated external defibrillator analyses the heart rhythms and defibrillates if necessary,“ said Assoc. Prof. Dr. S. Sipavičienė.
