LSU researchers Prof. Dr. Romualdas Malinauskas and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vilija Malinauskienė carried out a research with the aim to establish a link between physical inactivity and health problems associated with post-traumatic stress symptoms, behavioural and nutritional factors and internal coherence in the population of Lithuanian teenage girls. The research findings were published in the journal “Reports in Public Health Rio de Janeiro: Cadernos Saude Publica” indexed in ISI Web of Science (Thomson Reuters). The journal is published by the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil).

Random eighth-grade girls (n = 862) were interviewed anonymously. The results revealed that one of the most important things that teenage girls need to pay attention to be able to not only to preserve, but also strengthen health is to understand the importance of physical activity to health. On the basis of the research findings it can be stated that all health complaints were significantly associated with physical inactivity. A chance of health problems in physically inactive girls increases by 1,67 times. It is necessary to emphasize that in order to strengthen health, it is important to prevent post-traumatic stress. It was found that, during physical inactivity, but without post-traumatic stress symptoms, the possibility of medical problems increases by 1.57 times (less). Moreover, if there is no smoking or alcohol consumption on a daily basis with daily consumption of fresh vegetables instead, the possibility of health problems increases just by 1,25 times. In summary, teenage girls’ health problems are related to not only physical inactivity, but also to post-traumatic stress symptoms, unhealthy diet and harmful habits.
